Stony Meteorites

Stony meteorites, the majority of which are classified as Chondrites, make up 95% of all meteorites and are quite varied in material composition. Many of them are comprised of the oldest material that can be found on earth, up to 4.5 billion years old, older than the earth itself! Most stone meteorites break up during entry of the atmosphere and are usually quite small in size (less than a kilogram). Much of the meteorite material is vaporized during entry of the Earth’s atmosphere. However, there are some rarer examples of stone meteorites that can get quite large. These are much sought after by collectors. Any piece larger than 10kg is considered quite rare.
